Come join the women of Instrumental for an evening of food, drinks, networking, and discussion on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 for a Girl Geek X Dinner in Palo Alto!

The theme is Sexy Problems in Unsexy Industries: Manufacturing Edition.

Manufacturing is not only for hardware engineers – there’s a lot of opportunity in this space for people with all sorts of backgrounds! Instrumental girl geeks will discuss the challenges of creating a market in a giant space without incumbents, building a machine learning dataset from zero, and getting all of the pieces to work together.

Join the women of Instrumental at StartX Palo Alto to learn more about this unseen world that affects our lives every day:

* Anna-Katrina Shedletsky, Founder & CEO, Instrumental
* Simon Kozlov, Machine Learning, Instrumental
* Stella Mashkevtich, Senior Software Engineer, Instrumental
* Shilpi Kumar, Head of Technology Commercialization, Instrumental
* Perry Coneybeer, Marketing, Instrumental
* Janzel Manalansan, Executive Assistant, Instrumental — host

«Intro to Instrumental» with Anna-Katrina Shedletsky
Quick intro to founder and CEO Anna-Katrina. Quick overview of Instrumental and manufacturing. Addressing key technical problems — solving for: hardware, software, business development, marketing.

«Starting from Scratch» with Simon Kozlov & Stella Mashkevtich
Most of the time, performance of the machine learning models is limited by the quality of the data that's fed to them. This talk is about creating high-quality datasets in a startup environment. We will talk about possible ways to get the data you need and to make it high-quality, which includes experts providing labels and judgment. The problem with acquiring the data is that a lot of interesting datasets are not public and can't be bought. The problems with experts are that they're very hard to find and never agree with each other. We'll cover several ideas and practices that help with both.

“Product and Business Challenges in Unsexy Industries” with Shilpi Kumar

«Go To Market in Unsexy industries» with Perry Coneybeer

6:30pm – 7:00pm: Check-in, Networking & Dinner
7:00pm – 8:00pm: Welcome & Panel Discussion
8:00pm – 9:00pm: More Networking & Mingling

Instrumental was founded by two ex-Apple mechanical engineers who know firsthand how difficult it is to develop and build high quality products on time. Small, unexpected defects result in delayed product launches, lost revenues, and brand damage for even the most admired hardware companies. Current quality inspection and failure analysis techniques are labor-intensive and bombard engineers with data that isn’t concise enough to be used efficiently. Iteration is inhibited, even when engineers think they’re working quickly. At Instrumental, we have a vision of machine-centric manufacturing that allows engineers and operators to do more meaningful work and build high quality products faster than ever.

Anna-Katrina Shedletsky, Founder & CEO, Instrumental

Anna-Katrina is the CEO and founder of Instrumental, a manufacturing data company that uses machine learning to find anomalies on consumer electronics assembly lines. She has two degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, and went on to work as a Product Design Engineer at Apple. During her six years there, she designed mechanical components for three iPods and led system product design for the Apple Watch Series 1. After spending over 300 days in China finding and fixing issues on manufacturing lines, she started Instrumental to build an intelligent quality system to modernize manufacturing. Instrumental customers range from startups to Fortune 500s and span consumer electronics, apparel, and more.

Simon Kozlov, Machine Learning, Instrumental

Simon is a Machine Learning Engineer at Instrumental focusing on applying deep learning techniques to the manufacturing space. Prior to Instrumental, he was part of the machine learning team at Dropbox. Before that, he helped make deep learning possible by giving a reason for GPUs to exist — in other words, worked on games and real-time rendering.

Stella Mashkevtich, Senior Software Engineer, Instrumental

Stella is a Senior Software Engineer at Instrumental. Stella has more than 15 years of experience in Software Development. She worked on many different project in many different industries. She is a Meetup coordinator and member of Training Committee of Women In Big Data Forum. Stella holds a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Ukraine.

Shilpi Kumar, Head of Technology Commercialization, Instrumental

Shilpi works with core technology startups and is currently the Head of Technology Commercialization at Instrumental. She thrives on mission-driven teams that are tackling big messy problems. She holds a degree from Duke University, was the Head of Product Commercialization at Filament, and worked in venture capital as an Analyst with First Round. Her interests include: open data projects, public service design, renewable infrastructure and financing, decentralized systems theory, and basic income/asset models.

Perry Coneybeer, Marketing, Instrumental

Perry is a product marketing intern at Instrumental, leading marketing efforts across a variety of channels to clearly message our system in an opaque industry. After taking a year off from school to work in tech, she’ll be a sophomore this fall at Vanderbilt University, studying Communication of Science and Technology.

Janzel Manalansan, Executive Assistant, Instrumental

Janzel is an experienced Executive Assistant who is new to the tech scene. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from UC Davis in Political Science-Public Service and has spent her career primarily in the legal field. Her pivot to tech was largely inspired by the opportunity to work with Instrumental’s CEO Anna-Katrina Shedletsky. Women in Silicon Valley are rarely in leadership positions and Janzel brought her talent to support Instrumental’s founder Anna for this exact reason. Janzel also supports Anna’s Women In Stem Mentorship program for UC Berkeley, Stanford University and SJSU students in her free time.
