CARNAVAL: THE TOUR
Celebrate Our Folk
Featuring: Making Movies, Las Cafeteras, and Alex Cuba

Doors: 7:30 PM
Show: 8:00 PM

For four weeks in the summer of 2018, spaces across the USA will be reclaimed by the spirit of Carnaval and invoke a night of music, solidarity, and celebration with some of the most exciting Latin artists making music today. Carnaval The Tour is redefining folk in North America– highlighting the rich, but often overlooked, folk music of Latin America and the artists who are bringing it into the future. From Los Angeles to Cuba, Panama to New Orleans, Carnaval is a moment to let loose and express the resilience of the human spirit. It is an open and inclusive environment, a place where tradition and rebellion coexist.

This one-of-a-kind concert experience is an extension of the Making Movies Carnaval, a music and arts festival founded by American rock'n'roll band Making Movies. Carnaval The Tour celebrates Latino heritage in the United States by focusing on the integral role Latin music has played in the American story of folk, jazz, and rock'n'roll. «Celebrate Our Folk» is our way of saying «celebrate our America.»

Making Movies
Making Movies blends pulsing Afro-Latino rhythms, psychedelic jams and rock ’n’ roll swagger into powerful live performances, full of theatrics and cathartic climaxes. Armed with the ambitious and politically charged 2017 release I Am Another You — “lyrically and sonically one of the best albums of the year,” NPR raved — and a companion EP, You Are Another Me, the Kansas City band punches out one high-energy song after another. The foursome showcases their Latin American roots, with frontman Enrique Chi incorporating traditional instruments like the Panamanian mejorana alongside electric guitar, or the Chaurand brothers swapping drums and percussion for a dueling zapateado huasteco, a traditional form of dance from Veracruz, Mexico. The band's political idea is straightforward enough that they can express it in four words: “We are all immigrants.”

“Making Movies is breaking down walls in the United States” -Rolling Stone
“Lyrically and sonically one of the best albums of the year”

«A pointed social statement from a group who's sound is its own form of protest»
– KUTX, Austin

Las Cafeteras
Like modern-day troubadours, Las Cafeteras fuse traditional Afro-Mexican rhythms with the sounds of their city; telling the urgent stories of the day in a way unique to Los Angeles. These children of immigrants & Native Americans are known for their cutting social commentary & electric live performances. Las Cafeteras live show features four vocalist / multi-instrumentalists combining traditional requinto & jaranas from Veracruz, Mexico with zapateado stomp dancing, keyboard, drums & ukelele bass. Travel to the past and listen to the future of the Americas in one show as Las Cafeteras remix their roots from Afro-Mexican to Americana, from traditional to electric, hip hop to rock, from English to Spanish with all the emotions in between.

Featured in CNN's EMMY winning «United Shades of America», Hulu original series «East Los High» & their theme song for internationally acclaimed undocu-drama telenovela «Bajo El Mismo Cielo» Las Cafeteras' relevant message speaks to the times. Currently touring their second album “Tastes Like L.A.” the band’s been catapulted onto stages with Mexican icons Café Tacuba, Michael Franti, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's, John Legend & the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

«The beauty of Las Cafeteras approach — and what makes the bands sound fresh and smart — is the complementary way in which it deploys both Mexican and American elements”
– NPR

“While some look to find a voice through social media updates, protest or open dialogue… socially conscious musicians like Las Cafeteras are expressing and healing themselves through song.» – KCRW

“Urgent, relevant music” — BBC

Alex Cuba
A forward-thinking, indie-minded artist, Alex Cuba has amassed a steadily growing following among critics and fans. With over 20 awards and nominations to his name, including 4 Latin Grammys and two Junos Awards and three Grammy Nominations.
His music at once incorporates his roots and is a unique amalgam of styles. Collaborating with peers ranging from Jason Mraz to Ron Sexsmith and Jim Cuddy; and bringing together melodies, pop soul hooks and rock chords in songs that may seem to bear little resemblance to traditional Cuban form. His newest offering, Lo Unico Constante (The One Constant) sits comfortably between worlds and reflects on the intimate beauty of the guitar and vocals, back to the heart of the songwriting craft. Uplifting and bright to soulful and philosophical the songs will speak to the listener through melody as well as lyrics.

“(Alex) Cuba is a groundbreaking figure, which may say something about the process of giving roots music a cosmopolitan polish” – Nashville Scene

“Staying true to his Spanish language Folk-Funk-Rock hybrid has paid off.” – Billboard
