Life Beyond Earth

A Conversation about the SETI Artists in Residency Program.

Whenever we take a moment to reflect on the vastness of the universe and our place in it, some persistent and unanswered questions arise: Are we alone? Where and why does life flourish? Will we ever make contact with civilizations beyond our own? Scientists around the world are searching for answers to these important questions, but what role can artists play in helping us to examine our place in the cosmos?

The Sally & Don Lucas Artists Program at Montalvo Arts Center in partnership with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute is proud to announce the 2018 SETI Artist-in-Residence--internationally acclaimed composer, arranger, guitarist, conductor, and sound artist Felipe Pérez Santiago--at a lively evening of conversation and performance.

The evening event will feature Mexico City-based Santiago in conversation with SETI Institute President and CEO Bill Diamond; visual artist and SETI Institute Artist in Residence Program Director Charles Lindsay; Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI Research at the SETI Institute Dr. Jill Tarter; SETI Artist in Residence and Lucas Artists Program Fellow, Jen Bervin; and Montalvo’s Lucas Artists Program Curator Donna Conwell. Together, the group will explore the exciting potential for creative synergy when artists and scientists come together to exchange ideas pertaining to the central questions about life in the universe.

In addition to participating in the conversation, Santiago will share the progress of his ambitious live musical project Earthling, a work that he is developing in partnership with Dr. Jill Tarter. Members of the public will also have the opportunity to hear some of Santiago’s past work performed.

Plus, come early and enjoy cocktails prepared by a mixologist courtesy of Mezcal Meteoro and tacos from Oaxacan Kitchen Mobile.
