In tribute to San Jose Jazz Winter Fest’s opening night, the San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs is proud to present on the Sonic Runway acclaimed drummer Will Calhoun.
Sonic Runway is a sound-powered light-art installation in front of San Jose City Hall at 200 East Santa Clara Street. Sonic Runway was created by artists Rob Jensen and Warren Trezevant for the 2016 Burning Man festival as a visualization of the speed of sound and is now on display in San Jose through March 9.
Will Calhoun received his BA in recording and Will has recorded, produced and toured with artists from around the world including Mick Jagger, Harry Belafonte, Pharaoh Sanders, Salif Kieta, Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Mos Def-(Yassin Bey), Lauryn Hill, Paul Simon, Madonna, Stanley Jordan, Emily Sailers and Public Enemy, to name a few. Between touring and recording Will spends much of his time abroad- researching Music, and Ancestral Rhythms in West Africa, South America, and remote parts of Asia. Will’s creativity does not begin and end in music; he is also a photographer and visual artist. Will is currently an Artist-in-Residence in the Lucas Artists Residency Program at Montalvo Arts Center.
Will is on the advisory board of two very important organizations. BMHC (Bronx Music Heritage Center) where he develops local Bronx works, creating a stimulus for new/alternative art concepts in the Bronx. The second organization is THE WAY OF THE RAIN. An extraordinary multi-media group featuring Bylle and Robert Redford, paying homage to “Mother Earth”.
Will Calhoun's performance on the Sonic Runway is a free event.
