San Jose Taiko, DJ Cutso, and Kyle Abbott will be representing Japantown musicians at Sonic Runway in front of San Jose City Hall as part of the Experiments in Sound Series. Come hear and see how taiko drums, DJ beats, and the shamisen interact with the light patterns of Sonic Runway.
This performance is made possible thanks to grants from the Knight Foundation and The James Irvine Foundation, supporting San Jose Taiko's «Inspiration by Discovery» initiative.
About the Artists:
San Jose Taiko will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary next year. Formed in San Jose Japantown in 1973, the company continues to take the art form of taiko to new levels, while staying rooted to its cultural and artistic communities. The company is honored to invite two additional artists from San Jose Japantown:
DJ Cutso is one of the six-person production and DJ supergroup, The Bangerz. In 2010, San Jose Taiko and The Bangerz collaborated for the first time with an epic performance at the SubZero Festival in SofA District (https://youtube.com/watch?v=lyo1YkXzl7o&feature=youtu.be). Cutso's studio is currently in San Jose Japantown.
Kyle Abbott is one of the few shamisen professionals in the US. Founder of Bachido (International Shamisen Community). Kyle connects shamisen enthusiasts in a positive global community and develops teaching materials for anyone to learn shamisen. He currently teaches classes in San Jose Japantown.
