“Invented Hybrids”new Maker Space Artist in Residence, Heather Deyling
The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is pleased to announce our next Maker Space Artist in Residence, Heather Deyling. Deyling is a San Francisco based Artist/Educator. She will be in residence in the Maker Space July 7, 2017, through September 23, 2017. Heather Deyling holds a BFA in Painting/Printmaking from Kent State University and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. She is currently a Professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Deyling will be focusing on her ongoing series, “Invented Hybrids”. This series is a combination of installation, needle-felted wool sculpture, and drawing on paper. The work will be on display in the Maker Space Gallery. “Invented Hybrids” is inspired by Deyling’s interest in plants that flourish in difficult or rare conditions. Her project has evolved to include an exploration of marine invertebrates, fungi, mold and insects. The artist takes her inspiration from these organic forms to create imagined variations.
During the residency, Deyling will be inviting visitors to contribute to her installation. With the guidance of the artist, visitors will be able to create their very own felt pieces as part of the community engagement portion of the residency. Museum visitors are encouraged to visit during Deyling’s Open Studio hours to learn more about her felting process.
Beginning July 7, 2017, Deyling will be hosting Open Studios Thursday and Friday from 11 AM to 3:30 PM and Saturday from 11 AM to 2:30 PM. Museum Admission is $8.00, students (with valid ID) and seniors are $6.50, children 12 and under are free.
